Breastfeeding

Struggling

E used to nurse once, maybe twice a day while I was pregnant. I knew that there would be the likelihood that he would want to nurse more once his brother arrived and I was right. He now nurses every time he sees his brother and even when I'm not nursing G.

My concern is that now he is eating very little food because it seems as though he is filling up on breast milk. I don't mind tandem nursing, in fact I really like it because it's almost the only time get with E. Paul and my mom try to distract him, but it often leads to fits and tears and to me it's not worth it. I find myself having to nurse in another room if it's close to mealtime so he will eat, but then I feel guilty and don't like hiding it from him. I have also tried limiting the amount of time he nurses by counting down. That seems to help a little - he still gets to nurse, but doesn't get a full tummy. I'm hoping that if I "don't offer, don't refuse" that maybe he will begin to lower the amount of nursing sessions.

I know it's a big change for him having a new brother who gets "mommy milk" all the time. Anyone have any ideas on how to make this go a little smoother for both of us?

Trapped

The part of breastfeeding that people don't often wrn you about these first few weeks is how you can feel trapped in your own home, especially with another child. I feel as though I'm always nursing G or E. I have not left the house since Wednesday and I need to leave. Here's the problem: A) I take G with me - which I don't really want to do with him still being so fresh out of the womb, B) I take E with me - which I can't do because I'm always on call with G.

I told Paul today that I think E needs some mommy alone time. He suggested that I take him swimming, which is something he does with him nightly. Even there lies a problem...I can't go into the water yet! Ugh!

week 1 at home

What a ride it has been so far!

We arrived home Monday afternoon around 4:30 and were greeted by E and my mom. My dad came by with dinner and my sister came by with birthday cake. We had a small little celebration for me since I was in the hospital for my actual birthday. Our first night went fairly well, but E had a hard time going to bed. I think it was due to the fact that we were gone and now home for just a bit. G slept pretty well the first night in 2 and 3 hour chunks.

The next few days were tough. E would have fits like I've never seen before. He would take everything and throw it, fall down in fits of crying and screaming, and cry for just about everything. He wanted to nurse every time he saw me feed G, which I figured would happen. I just never thought I'd be feeding my two year old more than my newborn. E still cries when I have to get G to latch on first before he does. It is getting better though.

My parents have been over almost every day to help out with E and doing chores for us around the house. Yesterday they took E out to run some errands, Paul had taken my car for an oil change, and I had some quiet time alone with G. When they returned, E had fallen asleep and they forced Paul and I to take a nap. We ended up sleeping for two hours and it felt so good!

I'm not sure if it's because G is the second child and we've done this before, but he has been rather easy to take care of thus far. He rarely cries unless we have undressed him for a diaper change or he is upset that I have not gotten my nipple in his mouth fast enough. He is pretty easy to console and sleeps pretty well - although he likes to sleep more during the day than at night. I feel like E was fussier and more challenging to stop crying, then again, it is the first week!

Today, E woke up at 5:15 and came in to bed with us. We all ended up sleeping until 8:00! It was great at the time, but such a late wake up led to E not wanting to take a nap, so this evening was full of whining and fussing. We probably should have just gotten up!

The tandem nursing is going well. I had a hard time with it the first two days, mostly because I couldn't get comfortable. The first time we tandem nurse, E started crying when he saw G on me first. He then proceeded to hit himself which then made me cry. So our first session was quite heart wrenching. We've now figured out how to get comfortable! I enjoy nursing both the kids together, expect when I see myself in the mirror or a picture because then I just feel like a cow. :-( E is really greet when they nurse together. He will just pat G on the head, or touch his little body parts, and hold his hand. It's really quite sweet to watch. I love hat it still gives me some extra time to cuddle with E and to let him know that I still am here for him. I love when G falls asleep and Paul takes him to put him down because E and I can get a personal nursing session in.

E is really great with G even when they aren't nursing. He will come up and kiss him, give him hugs, and pat him. He will also mimic theings that G does (make a fist, put his hand to his face). He really likes it when we put G in the swing - E will go to him and kiss him or stop the swing so he can push him.

With us, E has been ok. He is not listening and following directions as well as he did before, but that is to be expected. We are trying to keep his days as normal as before G arrived. I think he is having a more difficult time with me than with Paul. I seems to need to stop him and make him look at me before I tell him something, otherwise he ignores me. But I think the fact that we can still nurse together is helping.

I'd say that our first week has gone well...it could have been worse!

Grayson's birth story

- A successful VBAC story -

I had been feeling contractions for about the past two weeks, mostly after work and in the evenings. They were irregular and not getting any more intense.

On Friday, August 19, Paul, E, and I went to celebrate the birthday of two of our friends at Nello's. I remember getting some stronger contractions while we were there. Paul went out with friends afterwards and I stayed home timing each contraction. They were about 5-7 minutes apart. I went to bed and nothing really changed.

The next morning, we were all up by 6 and getting our day started. I remember telling Paul that I was still having contractions and now they were stronger and closer together (4-6 min). I showered, shaved my legs, and even plucked my eyebrows. I put on the dress that I bought for this moment, a strapless red maxi dress. We called my mom to have her on standby and she was at our house by 10am. About an hour later, I nursed E down for his nap.

At about noon they were 4 minutes apart. We called my doula, Lisette, and she said she'd meet us at the hospital. I wasn't ready to leave yet. E was napping and I wouldn't be able to say goodbye. But off we went anyway.

As we arrived at OB triage, I saw my ob/gyn. He asked what we were doing there and I replied by saying something along the lines of "hopefully having this baby". We checked in and were sent back to be monitored for ten minutes. I was 3 cm and about 80% effaced. In my birth plan I requested to be sent home if I were less than four. The thought of another long and bumpy car ride didn't seem so great. They suggested I walk around for two hours and check my progress at that point. We went down to get some snacks and water. My parents even brought E so that I could see him (as well as some tasty Jamba Juice that I couldn't enjoy too much because E spilled it all over the floor). I would get contractions and they were coming more closely. Paul, Lisette, and E would massage me and sway with me when they came. E was so great at stroking my arms and legs. We went back again to be checked and I was about the same, but 3.5 cm dilated. The nurses contacted my doctor and he wanted to know what "the plan" was for me. He said that if I were to be admitted that he would let me progress for a few hours, but if nothing was changing that he would break my bag of water or administer pitocin, neither of which I wanted. The nurses agreed to extend "hospital policy" and let me stay for another two hours to check my progress. Again, we hung around. We considered going to a hotel, but ended up making a hang out spot in the corner of the triage waiting room. This time when I was checked, I was 4 cm and was admitted.

I was lucky enough to get one of the ancillary rooms which are large enough to hold the tub that we brought. I tried to lay down on the couch and rest, but would have to get up once a contraction came and they were coming quickly. We made the space more "homey" like - put up pictures of E, got some music going, put out the tulips we bought, and had some yummy scents flowing in the air.

Lisette was able to start the bath tub going and I was excited to go in once my monitoring was complete. The water felt really good for a while, but then it just started to make each contraction more intense and I wanted out! It was also at this time that I started to lose control. I wasn't as able to move as much as I had a been prior to getting in the water. Paul kept pouring water on my back and Lisette would walk me though relaxation scripts, but I remember that I kept saying I wanted it to end and I couldn't take it anymore. They got me out of the water because I needed to be monitored again.

At this point, I had no idea what time it was, but I kept feeling the need to go to the bathroom. I was asked if it was for pee or poop, but I couldn't really tell, I just wanted to sit on the toilet. As I was having a contraction alongside the bed, my water broke. More like gushed.. and with every move I made, more came out. The resident assigned to me also wanted to get an ultrasound to verify that G's head was down, not sure why. They wanted me to lie on my back which was NOT any kind of position that I wanted to be in at that time. I very clearly remember saying sh** and f*** at least once each. They finally were able to see he was head down and I got back to hands and knees. Lisette did another script and was able to get me back into a groove, for a bit. The contractions were so intense that I really wanted them to go away. I remember telling Paul that I just wanted a vaginal birth and I wasn't trying to prove anything by going natural. Between contractions, Paul and Lisette birth talked to me about what I wanted to do...I chose to get an epidural. Lisette suggested that I get checked to see what progress I had made and to maybe help me push through it, but I didn't, mostly because I didn't want to get checked and find out I still had a ways to go.

By 10:30 pm, the anesthesiologist came and I was ready for him. I had to sit still through three more contractions while the epidural was put in place and several more until the medication started working. I did request to be checked after the epidural was in and I was completely dilated. (Now looking back, I'm sure that Lisette knew I was a close, if not, complete!) I was able to rest for a bit and sleep a little too because there was still a little cervix there and he was still a bit too high. They did have me push to see if he would move down, but he didn't. They would have me change positions and gave me oxygen because G's heart rate kept dropping and wasn't always rising to normal as quickly as they wanted. My doctor came in and checked me - G was posterior, not a position I wanted him in. Again, time to move me a bit and put a ball between my legs.

At a minute passed midnight (Aug. 21 - my birthday), the nurses came in again, said happy birthday to me, and again were trying to get me into a good position. G's heart rate was still fluctuating, and I was starting to get nervous. The CRNA came and turned my epidural in half in hopes to get me to feel more when I pushed. My doctor came in around 1:00 and gave me two options. The first being a trial of delivery with forceps. The second was a c-section. I looked at Paul and then turned to my doctor and said that I wanted to try a vaginal delivery.

At that point, things went a little chaotic again. I remember that Lisette came over and reminded me to stay calm and focus on the baby, that with all the people about to come in, it could be worrisome. And then they flooded in. I would say that there were at least 12 medical staff in the room all wearing OR attire. My doctor confirmed that an OR was open and ready. I remember that he was telling the staff that we had to be quick because they didn't have much time. I was told to take a deep breath and then was told to push by just about everyone around me. After a few hard pushes and with the assistance of forceps, Grayson Lee was born on August 21, 2011 at 1:38 am. He weighed 7 pounds 13.6 ounces and was 20 1/2 inches long.

I will never forget how incredibly awesome it is to have a vaginal birth. I am so thankful that they turned my epidural down because I could feel Grayson coming out and I am forever thankful for that feeling. I was able to share that moment of seeing him for the first time with my husband and being able to touch his gooey head when he came out. It was such a good feeling that I just cried the whole time. Paul was able to cut G's cord, but we were not able to wait until it stopped pulsing because they wanted to get him checked out by the nurses. The nursing staff cleared his lungs and then they brought him over to means put him on my chest, skin to skin, while they stitched up my 2nd degree tear (I'm thinking that it was due to the forceps, at least that is what I am telling myself). His breathing was a bit grunty due to the fact that his transition into the world was so sudden and he wasn't able to clear his lungs upon exit, so they called for someone from the nursery to check him out. He was monitored for an hour and I was not able to feed him during that time, but he was on my chest. I was a bit concerned at to how he would do breastfeeding, but once I was able to try, he latched on within 30 seconds. (He's a champ like his brother!)

We stayed in the labor/delivery room until about 4 am and transferred to my post-partum room. I had to wake Paul up at this point because once everyone left the delivery room, he passed out on the couch...pretty sure I wore him out during the labor process. Our families came by later that day and I was so excited to see E and introduce him to his new brother. (My amazing photographer sister took some incredible photos and my dad has some great video footage!) E was not only excited to see his brother, but he was excited to have momma milk again.

Our stay at the hospital was nice and short this time. G didn't have jaundice and we were both cleared to go home the next day. We were so happy to be home with both of our boys and start our new lives as a family of four.

*Going into this pregnancy, I had planned on a vaginal birth. My research led me to a natural one - free of medication and artificial inductions. Did G's birth go according to plan? Not really. Did I have a labor free of artificial inductions? Yes. Did I labor naturally? For the most part. Did I get the vaginal birth that I wanted? Absolutely. Do I have any regrets? Not at all. I am thrilled at how this birth went and I am so blessed to have experienced it.

26 months and 39 weeks

Don't worry, first born son, I have not forgotten about you. Today you are 26 months old.

It seems that I've been so wrapped up with G-unit's arrival that I feel as though E hasn't gotten much attention on this blog lately. Taking pictures of him has even suffered. He is doing rather well! It seems like his speech therapy sessions are helping out too. I haven't been able to attend one since the first session, but I'm planning to leave work right away and make the last little bit of his session tomorrow. The teacher really seems to enjoy working/playing with E and says (in her notes) that he's catching on. His teacher suggests that we focus on the beginning sounds of each word and draw attention to our mouths as we speak. He will now say "uh oh", "whoa", "mo" for more, "ah dah" for all done, is saying "wawa" for water instead of signing, "ub" for up, "oo oo" for monkey, and -my personal favorite- "ma ma maaaa/ma ma miiiii" for mama milk. In addition, he will begin talking to himself, to us, or on the phone (real or pretend) and make babbling sounds that make him sound like a drummer/African bushman - "duhkuh duhkuh duhkuh".

His level of energy seems to be at an all time high. He loves chasing Layne around, yells "dada" when Paul comes home, and loves climbing/swinging with Paul, or having Paul throw him on our bed.

Paul has been doing bath/bed time each night and that is going well too. He turned around E's toddler bed almost a week ago and we haven't heard a peep from E once he falls asleep since that happened. He's getting his rest and so are we!

It seems as though lately, E has become fascinated with Curious George and wants to watch the same episode each morning while we get ready for work. He ends up jumping around all over the bed because of watching the dogs in the episode.

E continues to make me laugh. I will ask him if he loves me and he shakes his head no. I then ask him what he does love and he says "mama" while signing milk. I ask if he missed me for the day while I am at work and he says no. When I ask what he did miss, he says "mama" while signing milk. Silly boy.

I still worry about how he will react when G-unit arrives, but I know that I don't have too much control over that. We talk to him all the time about what G-unit and how he will sleep, eat, and cry most of the time. I think E is pretty excited about meeting him (and the fact that he will be able to fit in my lap once again). Every time E hears a baby/child cry, he says "sh sh sh" and points to my belly. He has become quite fond of my protruding belly button. Sometimes he will just walk around the house following me while touching my belly button.

And as for you, second born-to-be, you have arrived at 39 weeks in utero. It seems as though you're happy to be where you are for at least a bit longer. You enjoy preparing me for your arrival with practice labor contractions. Guess you really want me to be ready for your grand entrance. Sometimes you get me thinking that the time has come and then you stop. You've definitely found your place deep inside my body. Everyone keeps telling me how much I've "dropped", but I'm pretty sure it is you doing the dropping. You're room is set and if you don't get here soon, I think you're brother is going to take it over. (I'm already finding his toys magically appearing in there.) Your brother seems to think that your bassinet is more like a bunk bed. He says that you will sleep on the top and he will sleep in the bottom. Grandma Hopper even told me that he climbed under there and couldn't get out. :-) Mommy and Daddy can't wait to meet you and it would make it even better if we didn't have to go to work on Monday. Either way, we will still love you.

My 30th birthday is this Sunday. I have yet to think about it other than when Paul and my friend, Valerie, ask me what I'd like as gifts. I can honestly say that this is the first year when I have not thought about it being my birthday. As for gifts...I could use a new wire whisk since someone in this house thinks both of mine are toys.
