YES!

I now FINALLY have the chance to blog. It seem as though the past two weeks have been hectic, but that's really not the case.

We've been spending our time getting to enjoy our new gym membership at LA Fitness. I've fallen in love with Zumba - it's fun, it's dance, and it doesn't feel like a workout. Since the last time I did any core strengthening was when I was teaching colorguard, I thought it would be a great idea to take Pilates. Well, it turned out to be a good idea. However, it was definitely apparent that I have lost the abdominal strength that I once had. It hurt to breathe the next day due to the pain I was in, but it felt good at the same time knowing that I would be stronger because of it.

Last week I finished two of my master's classes and this week I started my final course. Only 7 more sessions to go until graduation! My cap and gown also came in a week ago. When I saw the package on the kitchen counter, I threw the box open and started to dress myself. Camera in hand, I ran over to Paul to have him take a picture of me!

Husband is doing well too. He has been able to come home a reasonable hour and is home to help with bedtime routine. Paul is really looking forward to being able to take some time off in December for the holidays.

Baby boy is fabulous! We have gone to the park, gotten yet another haircut, went to Boo at the Zoo (no camera that day), and he even received his first pony from my parents!

(He loves the horse: riding it, pulling it, petting it. Just don't push the ears and turn on the horse. It whinnies, neighs, and it's tail and head move. Poor little guy becomes terribly afraid of it.)

He is still running all around the house and everywhere else we go. He has gotten several cuts and bruises. His impetigo is doing better, but still not completely healed. We went to the pediatrician again just before flying out to Minnesota and he gave us another medication to try. It doesn't seem to bother Evan at all, though.

What is bothering him is the fact that he has about 4 teeth that are working on erupting soon. His gum line is quite puffy and white, plus he continues to chomp on his fingers (or us), and drools.

I have been pretty fortunate that in the past 17 months of nursing him, he has never actually bitten me on purpose. That is until about a week ago. Now Evan will nurse, then work his way off slightly bear down. He thinks it's hilarious until I put the ta-tas away. Too bad, so sad little man.

I'm looking forward to tomorrow when we get to "force" him into his scarecrow costume. I have a feeling that it will not go to well.

Minnesota

I have been to many states, but most of them I have only seen from a bus window or football stadium. This past weekend, Paul and I went to Minnesota for his cousin's wedding. We were able to leave Evan with my parents while we had a mini-vacation.

We arrived late Friday night/early Saturday morning. Saturday morning we went to meet up with his family and had breakfast in the hotel. Since the wedding wasn't until later in the afternoon, I suggested we hit the Mall of America! I have never seen roller coasters in a mall OR a two story Old Navy! Hallelujah!

The exit to our hotel - Betty Crocker Dr. Our hotel was also next to the General Mills headquarters.
I don't think there are any Starbucks in Minnesota, only Caribou Coffee.Although Paul's family is Catholic, his cousin married a man who is Greek Orthodox and they were married in the Greek Orthodox church. I have never been to a Greek Orthodox wedding and it was quite different than what I'm used to as a Catholic. First off, the entire (or almost all) of the ceremony was sung. The bride and groom do not exchange vows or place the rings on each others fingers - the priest does. They circle the alter three times and crowns are placed on their heads which cross three times, too. Although it was different, it was still beautiful and special.

I saw this house on the street heading to the church. I think it's stunning. It's $1.2 million stunning.
The view from the church courtyard to Lake Calhoun. The reception was at a golf course. Paul and I had such a blast with his family that night. So much so, that we weren't having a blast the next day. Yuck!

Yummy cake!
Brighid (my SIL), Emily (the bride), and myselfCongratulations, Emily and Alex! May you live happily ever after!

Yesterday, I purchased my graduation garments: cap, gown, hood, and an honor cord (for my expected 4.0 GPA). I can't wait to get them in!

Fall break, 2nd half B

Today we celebrated my mother-in-law's birthday, as well as my sister-in-law's. We had a wonderful lunch and then we went to the park nearby to play with the cousins. What a fun day!
Happy birthday, Grandma!
Happy birthday, Aunt Meghan!

Fall break, 2nd half A

I'm so fortunate to have a husband that works so hard to support our husband. It can also be unfortunate to have a husband that works so hard to support out family. Luckily, Paul was able to take some time off of work while I was on fall break to spend time with Evan and me.

We were able to run a bunch of errands around town and spend some quality time together as a family. Since it has been rather warm here and we've been wanting to take a little family trip together, we decided to head up to Payson for a night and go camping. Paul, Evan, Layne (our dog), and I were ready to take on an adventure.

Evan did really well on the two hour drive up. He slept for half of it, which was great! Layne also did fairly well after he settled down and realized that he wasn't getting out of the car for a while.

We arrived in Payson around 12:30, picked up some lunch and headed to our campsite to set up. Once we found out site, we took some time to stretch out our legs and walked around the grounds. Evan had a blast looking at the tall pine trees and stepping on pine cones. He tried to pick the up but they kept pricking him. Afterwords, we ate our lunch and I set up the tent.

Like my method of holding on to my child?

It's a good thing that our tent was up because it was rather warm out. We were able to get Evan inside for some shade and undress him to his diaper. I tried to get him down for a nap around 3, but was unsuccessful. We spent our afternoon exploring (including the creek that was drying up just behind our campsite), collecting firewood, and setting up camp. Paul made us some delicious turkey sausages and black beans for dinner. Evan also had some corn and pasta shells.

At 5:30, I tried to get Evan down for bed. Unfortunately, the tent was not dark like his bedroom is for bedtime. The attempt for sleep was unsuccessful. We started our fire (after several attempts) and made some smores. Once the sun had gone down, I was able to get Evan to sleep around 7:15. He looked adorable so bundled up for bed. Not only did he have his footie pajamas, but socks on underneath, but sweatpants and a fleece jacket on top.

Paul and I stayed up for a bit enjoying some Heineken and spending some time together but the fading fire. Around 8:00, Evan woke up crying and I headed in to nurse him. At that point, Paul and Layne came to bed too.

It was starting to get chilly outside, but the real cold weather didn't set in for a few more hours.

Evan was up every hour or so. At least that's what it seemed like. I would cuddle him up nice and close, but his hands were so cold! I felt terrible that I hadn't purchased him some gloves with which to sleep. We survived the night, but my hips were killing me! It was as though I was pregnant again!

Evan woke up at 5:30am (no surprise there) and was quite unhappy about where he was. Paul and I started packing up and we left Payson by 7:30 am. The drive home was ok too. We had to stop and get some air in the tires, played the Backyardigan's theme song several times for Evan, and had some breakfast. Evan napped for just under an hour in the car.

When we arrived home at 9:30, Paul unpacked a few things from the car and we all laid down in bed. To our surprise, all of us woke up at 11:50! YIKES! Talk about being thrown off schedule! Oh well.

The weekend was a blast. I'm so grateful that we were able to take our first family "vacation" and it turned out so well. Here are some of my favorite moments:

1. Evan taking tumbles in the woods. Paul was watching him while I took some things out of the car. As I look back to where they are, I see Evan trip face first over a long "log" about 6" in diameter. Another is when Evan fell off of the drive way to the ground backwards (it's a couple of inches in height difference).

2. Evan walking Layne. While we were camping, Evan wanted to hold Layne's leash and take him on walks. At one point, I was tying my shoes, Paul was lighting the bbq, and Evan...well, when I looked over at him, he was walking Layne...down a hill! EEK!

3. Smores. I love smores. I love smores with marshmallows that have been cooked over a fire. Yum.

4. Sitting with my hubby drinking a beer while we watched the stars.

5. Although it's not a nice or fun moment, it makes the list - peeing in the woods. It beats using the toilets that were provided. Picture it...a toilet that is open to the sewage below. When you enter the bathroom, flies come out. When you open the toilet seat lid, flies come out. I'll take the woods, thank you.

6. Cuddling with Paul and Evan to keep warm, although it didn't help much.

7. Seeing Evan in mounds of clothes to keep his warm. Poor guy couldn't put his arms down.
8. Seeing Evan play with pine cones. He had a little bucket that he put one into along with some pine needles.

9. Eating inside the tent with my family to avoid the bees/hornets that wanted our food.

10. Making memories with my family!

diagnosis

After a couple weeks of treating Evan's chapped lips and red spots with Aquaphor and hydra-cortisone, they weren't getting any better. In fact, they were getting worse. We took him in on Friday morning to have his pediatrician take another look.

The diagnosis? Impetigo. The cure? Bactroban.

I'm just glad that we now have something to help our baby feel (and look) better. His red spots are now drying up, flaking, and getting crusty. Yuck. But at least it's healing.

Fall break, 1st half

I'm now at the midway point of my fall break. Although my students have another week off after this one, I go back to work on Monday. Here is a little recap of the past few days.

One of E's favorite hang out spots. Our bathtub. He climbs in almost entirely on his own.
One of my favorite things that he does - runs up behind you and buries himself in your legs. Then I shake my body and it makes him roar with laughter.
I do believe that he has a few more teeth coming in (hence the ear grabbing). His gums are quite puffy and his upper left cuspid looks as though it's starting to erupt. And he likes to walk around with his hands in his pants.
A trip to Amsterdam for Grandpa Jack's and Aunt Molly's birthdays.
Many very important cell phone conversations to my Laurie Berkner radio station on Pandora.
And still, a case of I-don't- know-what around his mouth. It could be irritation from gnawing on his fingers from teething, saliva, or (what I think is) an allergy. It was going away for a bit and came back right around the time I gave him blueberries. I'm cutting them out to see if it makes a difference.

My favorite part of all fall break...MOMMY AND EVAN TIME!!!!!!!!!!

that didn't last long

Evan woke up and hour later. I've got a Mr. Crabby Pants on my hands. And a headache. Good thing he's cute.

2 to 1

I think we've now entered the transition period from two naps down to one. Seeing as though Evan didn't take afternoon naps for the past few days, even after trying three seperate times yesterday, I think its time. After a few suggestions from friends that are mommies, today was our first attempt.

Evan did fairly well staying up past his usual 9am nap. We went for a walk after breakfast, watched some Glee (for Mommy's sake though Evan really enjoyed the singing), went to the grocery store, and then had some lunch. Finally...nap time!

Just before ten thirty, Evan started to get very fussy and began rubbing his eyes. We went into his room and dikd our usual nap routine. I set him down in his crib (he almost fell asleep nursing immediately) and the wailing began. I went back to calm him down three times, and he finally fell asleep after almost an hour. The last time it took him that long to fall asleep that long was several weeks ago. I'm hoping that its due to a change of schedule/routine. I'm hoping tomorrow is better.

Now I'm just listening to his poor little hiccups while he sleeps. :-(

the countdown begins

Today I received such a happy email. It wasn't so much the content, but what the content meant. The email was about NAU's grad fair and it included a link to purchase items online. That means that I can now purchase my cap, gown, and hood for graduation in December!

Although I didn't buy them quite yet, I did reserve our hotel for the evening. Now I also get to start another invitation/announcement project. Yes, I'm sending them out, but just to some family and friends.

Can't blame me for being excited, can you?!
